In news unrelated to anything, I really, really want a LOST Babies spinoff. It could be Muppet Babies-style, by which I mean it could be Total Crack and ignore all preexisting canon and break continuity regularly.

I would accept a cartoon version, as that would be in keeping with Babies spinoff tradition, or a live-action version, because the various baby!Losties who have been on the show are all adorable.

(Not necessarily literal babies, just much-younger-versions of the existing characters. I could see an elementary or middle school version working, given the baby!Losties we've seen in canon. But toddler versions, Muppet Babies-style, would be my real preference.)

Claire could have a baby doll she calls Aaron! Michael could have a Walt rag doll that's always getting misplaced! Charlie could play on a toy guitar! Frank could have toy helicopters and airplanes and annoy everybody by running all over the playroom with them pretending to fly! Jack could have a little toy stethoscope and fight with Sawyer over who gets to rescue Kate from the kitchen where she got caught stealing the last cookie! Vincent could be the playroom puppy! Rose and Bernard could be the Nanny-type figures! Ben could...be creepy!

It could be awesome, man.

Thank you for taking the time to contact us with your concerns. We understand that gender is not binary, and intend to respect that understanding for our users.

At this time, the code you reference is not live on the site, and will not become so in the future. We know that you, and many other users, have serious concerns about any requirement to specify gender, so we'd like to take a moment to explain events and our position further.

The intention of this code was to change the sign-up process to include a field for the selection of gender; that the code would completely disable the "Unspecified" option at the same time was deemed unacceptable. While the code in question had gone to our beta (testing) server, it had not gone to our production server, and will not do so due to this problem. Furthermore, we'd like to clarify that code posted to the changelog community is not always final, as such code must then go through the beta testing process and can often be changed before actual implementation.

Additionally, some erroneous information has been spread regarding the potential public display of the gender field. We would like to clarify that gender is not currently publicly displayed on the profile, nor anywhere else on the site, and there are no plans to change this behavior.

It is unknown whether this is to require public specificity in the future or if it will remain private.)

* LiveJournal is removing the Unspecified option for the gender field. That's right: you get to be male or female. Period. That's it. (Source.)

If this pisses you off as much as it pisses me off, go to Edit Profile and select Unspecified for your gender option. Then, go to http://www.livejournal.com/contact/?dept=feedback and politely register your displeasure. (The people who read and process Feedback are not the people who make the decisions. They are often the people who are yelling internally about the decisions.)

(This will likely take place at the next code push, which given LJ's history will be either this Thursday or next, so spread the word fast, especially to the genderqueer community. After that point, you will no longer be able to pick "Unspecified" as your gender.)

I read http://community.livejournal.com/changelog/7932846.html and subsequent commits with dismay, particularly the part where gender is now a) a required field and b) a binary option. Gender is not a binary; there are many people who do not identify as either male or female.

LiveJournal always received high marks from the transgender and genderqueer community because it didn't require people to specify, and didn't require people to choose either/or, when it came to the gender field. LJ also received heavy pressure to offer an "Other" option in addition to the "Unspecified"; you can read the early history of the "gender_petition" community for details. I am particularly dismayed by this change, because LiveJournal under both Danga and Six Apart said, repeatedly, that a). the Gender field would never be a mandatory field to fill out, and b). if it became so, the options would be expanded to include "Other". A simple interest search on "transgender" or "genderqueer" will illustrate how many people are aware of this issue, and you can review suggestions going back to 2001 (http://community.livejournal.com/suggestions/36453.html) about it.

Transgender and genderqueer individuals experience discrimination every day when they are forced to identify themselves with the gender binary when it doesn't apply to them. Please do not contribute to this oppression.

Please keep the "Unspecified" option for gender, and add an "Other" option, if you are making the gender field mandatory. Please do not contribute to the oppression of others. While I recognize that having a user's gender makes advertisers happier, collecting revenue at the expense of human suffering is not the action of a company I want to do business with.

My LOST season 5 DVDs came today!

I splurged on the Dharma Initiative Orientation Kit special edition, and I'm glad I did despite the cost because it's awesome. Well, the packaging is awesome. The stuff that I assume doesn't come in the regular addition is mostly fluff (with the exception of the VHS orientation tape, which is AWESOME), but, still, I'm very happy with it.

So now I'm watching season 5 and indulging in how much I love this show and these characters and half wishing that the new season would start NAO OMG and half getting really upset over the idea that the new season is the LAST season. This show has been very important to me. It's hard to believe it's going to end. :(

So I'm choosing to ignore that little fact for a moment in favor of OMG SHINY. ♥

This show strains my suspension of disbelief so bad. This episode might be the worst offender in that case. Can they really change their set list at a competition at the very last moment like that? What the hell was the point of "Don't Rain On My Parade"? It was very pretty and possibly my favorite of Lea's performances on this show to date, but completely inappropriate for a show choir. I also spent a significant amount of time thinking "How did they let the spot ops know where she was going to enter from? There's no way they had time to rehearse the blocking of this with the light techs. They must hate her so much." Also, as my brother asked and I had no idea how to answer, why can't Will go to Sectionals as a spectator?

And please don't get me started on the huge stuttering elephant in the room. WHY DOES NOBODY COMMENT ON TINA'S LACK OF A STUTTER? Why has she dropped the stutter? Did everybody but Artie just already know it was fake and are now so glad she's stopped it that they're not going to mention it to her? WHY DO I EXPECT ANSWERS OR CONTINUITY FROM THIS SHOW?

Aside from that.

I love Brittany so much. "If it were, Santana and I would be dating." "I did...but I didn't know what she was going to use them for."

It makes me grin that "Brittany, Santana, Mike, Matt, you guys are our best dancers so you choreograph a dance for us in the next five minutes!" They may not get lines, but dammit, they're the best dancers!

Emma does make a beautiful bride. I'm so glad she left Will after his "I just left my wife." Both because I don't really ship Will/Emma and because that is a terrible time to hook up with a guy, especially if it comes in the wake of your own failed wedding attempt. Good on you for realizing that, Emma! Not so good for letting him kiss you in the hall shortly after, though.

Sue's been fired? That should shake up the status quo! If they remember it in the spring, anyway.

YAY TROPHY AS BIG AS TINA.

The performances were great -- Amber Reilly rocked "I Am Telling You", ngl, and the Sectionals performances were pretty fantastic, too. And I'm glad that we're going into this hiatus with most if not all of the major secrets out in the open. And Tina got lines and Brittany and Santana and Mike and Matt all got at least acknowledged and all of them but Matt got lines (GIVE MATT LINES! Who's with me?) and I guess what I'm saying is that when I manage to turn my brain off and stop expecting consistency and continuity and reason from the writers I really enjoy this show.

So yeah.

Yesterday we all went out to meet up with my aunt and go see Tuba Christmas (which is always fun), and then down to Williamsburg to see the Grand Illumination (which was...anticlimactic) and then the fireworks (which were pretty cool). Today I broke out A Muppet Christmas Carol on VHS and watched it. (It's December, an acceptable time for Christmas movies! We will not discuss that I have in the past watched AMCC in July because I wanted a blue furry Charles Dickens who hangs out with a rat.)

Said it before, will likely say it again, it is my very favorite version of 'A Christmas Carol'. I love the Muppets.

(I may break out other Christmas Muppet movies later, but this one is my very favorite. ...I don't have A Muppet Family Christmas :/ but I think I have all the others?)

Can I just, can I just say that watching Will tower over a cowering Terri as she desperately apologizes in COMPLETE TERROR and he throws things around, screams, and actually lifts a hand against her is really freaking scary?

I mean, okay, whatever, I get it, it's a ~Ryan Murphy~ show and none of the characters are supposed to be really ~likeable~ but there is a line between 'unlikeable comedy protagonist' and 'domestic abuser' and Will just crossed that line. :/

I mean... really?

(I missed like half the episode from 'tornado watch warnings', and then I couldn't focus on the rest of the episode because I was freaking out about domestic abuser Will.)

On the other hand, I haven't left the house for several days, which is probably a vote 'for'.

I did it, yay! The story's not remotely finished yet, but I hit 50,000 words -- on one story, written linearly -- and I am really, really proud of myself right now, because I do not tend toward longfic.

And the fact that it's original fiction with original characters just makes it that little bit better, you know?

I don't like everything I've written this month, the timeline makes very little sense, I'm sure I've done horrible things to the music profession. But I kept going and I wrote and I'm very proud of myself right now.

Hey, won't you all be glad in a week when November is over and I talk about things besides my ridiculous novel?

Anyway. I need a throwaway LJ name. It's for a LiveJournal review of the band's first EP, and, you know, there has to be someone to post it. And possibly an appropriate community, although I think I can make a community name up more easily than a oneshot poster.

So, yes, LiveJournal name that no one's using. Or I guess you could volunteer your own if you'd like a shoutout in the Story No One But Me Will Ever Read and you think you'd be a fan of a band called 'A Good Name For A Rock Band' that records songs like 'Prophecies Are Always Right' and 'I Minored In Tropology' and 'If It's You It's Okay'.

Good news time: I have almost finished my RL Christmas shopping! I'm doing it all online but that's irrelevant! My mom is the only one I haven't bought for yet, and I'm pretty sure I know what's I'm getting her. (Related: FLIST. WISHLISTS. Pls? :O ) Animorphs is apparently being rereleased in 2012 with new covers and (possibly) somewhat modernized content! There are new Doctor Who spoiler filming pics on the Internet!

Watched the CIN special clip of the The End Of Time. Yay, YouTube!

First watching, the jokes really grated. Just...too many, too quick on top of one another, trying too hard.

After some thought, I am more okay with that, because I can see it being intentional: Ten's always been covering up the inner darkness and emo with jokes and energy and such. If he's really broken now, I can see him trying harder than ever as trying to come off as having nothing more important to think about than island partying and marrying Queen Elizabeth I.

(Also, in contrast to most reactions I've seen, I'm really not happy with the Queen Bess joke. I prefer my Doctor's sexuality to be ambiguous, and while I realize I was never going to get that with RTD in charge, it still grates. And it just felt wrong.)

Anyway, the point is, I REALLY REALLY HATE THIS WAIT. How long 'til Christmas?

I'm not a big fan of the Raxacoricofallapotrious natives, regardless of storyline. NFM, thanks.

BUT. I love Clyde Langer, Master Chef! and Clyde smuggling K9 out to help him with schoolwork and Mr. Smith being snarky about K9 and Sarah being very mother wolf over Luke and Clyde and Rani being awesome and trying to keep everyone at school safe and Sarah being all "IT'S MISS SMITH TO YOU" and Rani covering K9's ears for him and the look between Sarah and Luke when the cure works and Luke/Clyde hugz and awwww.

So it balances out, is I guess what I'm saying.
