23 November 2009 @ 08:53 pm
Hey, won't you all be glad in a week when November is over and I talk about things besides my ridiculous novel?

Anyway. I need a throwaway LJ name. It's for a LiveJournal review of the band's first EP, and, you know, there has to be someone to post it. And possibly an appropriate community, although I think I can make a community name up more easily than a oneshot poster.

So, yes, LiveJournal name that no one's using. Or I guess you could volunteer your own if you'd like a shoutout in the Story No One But Me Will Ever Read and you think you'd be a fan of a band called 'A Good Name For A Rock Band' that records songs like 'Prophecies Are Always Right' and 'I Minored In Tropology' and 'If It's You It's Okay'.

Tess is completely unable to tell when Liam and Conor are messing with her head. It's cute. <3

I'm behind on my word count, but if I hit 32,000 tonight and average 2,000 words a day for the rest of November, I can still make it! ...let's see if that happens. :/

Good news time: I have almost finished my RL Christmas shopping! I'm doing it all online but that's irrelevant! My mom is the only one I haven't bought for yet, and I'm pretty sure I know what's I'm getting her. (Related: FLIST. WISHLISTS. Pls? :O ) Animorphs is apparently being rereleased in 2012 with new covers and (possibly) somewhat modernized content! There are new Doctor Who spoiler filming pics on the Internet!

That's a lot of exclamation points!

UNRELATED: Please assure me that other people on my flist who are not me play/have played/are aware of the existence of the game Egyptian Ratscrew? ...please?

Six-hundred-odd words shy of my word count goal for the night. Arrgh. I miss having my lead. Where did my lead go?

(Seriously, if I ever do this again I'm setting whatever story it is in a made-up time/place so that whenever I get stuck I can just go off on a worldbuilding tangent.)

(Related problem: Should be writing. Instead, updating LJ and archive-binging on Antihero for Hire. Damn you, cyberpunk webcomics.)

...trying to resist the urge to have a vaguely-plot-relevant discussion about "How exactly do we go about selling an album online anyway" into a fandom-related debate. It's January 2010! They would have seen Matt Smith in action by then, however briefly, right? Or they could argue about What Joss Whedon Should Do Next. Or webcomics. Or something. It is entirely too early in the month for me to do this.

Determined to hit 20,000 tonight. No idea how I'm going to accomplish that.

My timeline makes no sense. None. At all. Sense, it makes none. :/ At this point, the band has been in existence (as it stands now, i.e., counting from Johnny joining) for about two months. They just announced the release date for their first album. Which...sense, it makes none. On top of that, Liam and Michael have been dating for about two months now (somewhat less time than the band's existence, but not by much) and Liam doesn't even know about Michael's stealth geekitude yet. I know this, because I'm determined to actually write Liam finding out about Michael's geekiness, and it hasn't happened yet. And I'm still not clear on how Tess came home from school for a long weekend in mid-November and wound up staying over a week. Why didn't she just wait for Thanksgiving break?

This whole story makes increasingly less sense the more I try to make it make any at all.

*flails and sulks a bit*

...and I'm kind of blocked. :/ Liam and Michael are currently hanging out in the Aquarium discussing digital piracy of the few songs the band has released so far, and I have no clear idea what happens next. Uh. :(

Anyway. According to my flist, it is That Time Of Year again!

THE RULES
Step One:
- Make a post (public, friendslocked, filtered... whatever you're comfortable with) to your LJ. The post should contain your list of 10 holiday wishes. The wishes can be anything at all, from simple and fandom-related (fics, graphics, etc.) to medium (books, dvds, etc.) to really big (computer, house, pony!, etc.) The important thing is, make sure these wishes are things you really, truly want.
- If you wish for real life things (not fics or icons), make sure you include some sort of contact info in your post, whether it's your address or just your email address where Santa (or one of his elves) could get in touch with you. [Note: Your home address is not required!]
- Also, make sure you post some version of these guidelines in your LJ.

Step Two:
- Surf around your friendslist (or friendsfriends, or just random journals) to see who has posted their list.

And now here's the important part: If you see a wish you can grant, and it's in your heart to do so, make someone's wish come true. Sometimes someone's trash is another's treasure, and if you have a leather jacket you don't want or a gift certificate you won't use--or even know where you could get someone's dream purebred Basset Hound for free--do it.

You needn't spend money on these wishes unless you want to. The point isn't to put people out, it's to provide everyone a chance to be someone else's holiday elf--to spread the joy. Gifts can be made anonymously or not--it's your call.

There are no guarantees with this project, and no strings attached. Just...wish, and it might come true. Give, and you might receive. And you'll have the joy of knowing you made someone's holiday special.

Query: Would it be entirely too Black Donnellys ripping-off of me if Conor wins the restaurant in a card game? Because I can't seem to come up with another way for him to become the owner of a restaurant. Suggestions welcome.

Today the little brother bought a PS3 and is currently setting it up. I don't entirely understand gaming consoles, but I gather this is a Good Thing for him.

So not much progress yet today. I like writing the nakama hanging out together, but they're hard to write, because not much happens while they're together aside from giving each other a hard time. Most of the scene so far has been devoted to establishing explicitly that Tommy is the Team Mom and Sara is the Team Dad and that the other four have never matured much past the ten-year-old stage. Blah.

I like this being-ahead-of-schedule thing, although now I am home from teh Niki's my productivity will probably go down. (It's very useful having someone in the room to bounce questions off of, okay?) Michael and Tess have both been introduced into the story proper; the band has released two songs on their YouTube account, one with a video and one without. There have been several pointless conversations, including Kyle trying to convince Liam he's not allowed to wear fingerless gloves in public, a band rehearsal stopping so the boys can quote xkcd at each other, a lengthy debate over the name of the band which was mostly just an excuse to toss TVTrope titles at each other, and a discussion of T stops.

Pointless.

Anyway. Now I am making peanut butter cookies for my brother-in-law and eating leftover Halloween candy. Yay! Have a meme, 'cause...I want to?

Cracked 5000 last night, which I'm happy about, but I have not been able to write yet today. :/ Of those 5088 words, most is dialogue. Much of it is bantering and/or geek culture references. Ryan has been introduced into the story (and Johnny appears to be developing a crush on him, which, weird), and the concept of the nakama has been fumblingly explained, and the band seems on track to record their first proper song as a band. Regrettably, at this point I appear to have temporarily stalled out on how to move on to the next important thing. Um.

I'm pretty sure most of what I've written so far is awful, but I'm still going forward! And that's the important part! ...right?

I should probably stop procrastinating and actually try to write.

Anyway. Last night, AS PLANNED, teh Niki and teh Niki's boy and I got all dressed up in old jeans and white tees and went to see EVIL DEAD: THE MUSICAL at the Generic Theater. We were the second group in line for the Splatter Zone, and the first to find seats: front row, dead center.

Teh Niki's boy got knocked in the knee by Good Old Reliable Jake during "Good Old Reliable Jake", a story which was almost immediately overshadowed by the fact that Good Old Reliable Jake went on to give me a lap dance.

The show was brilliant, the cast was great, we laughed hysterically through the whole thing and the show stopped dead for applause any time Ash said any of his more famous lines. ("Good, bad...I'm the guy with the gun." "This is my BOOMSTICK!" "Give me some sugar, baby." And, of course, "Shop smart. SHOP S-MART!") Cheryl breaking out "If Chins Could Kill" by Bruce Campbell when Scott told her to "go read a book" was, I think, one of everyone's favorite moments.

At the end of the first act, all three white t-shirts were still spotless, and there was some disappointment discussed during intermission. This was soon remedied in the second act; we're pretty sure that backstage, various cast members were going "Hey, did you see those idiots in the front row wearing white? Okay, so in this scene, you get the one on the right, and I'll get the one on the left, and, uh, you target the middle one." We were drenched and sticking to ourselves by the time we left. The staff were taking pictures of audience members leaving, just candid snapshots, but when we came out they stopped us and went "Okay. We have to get a photo of you three."

:D

It was kind of a ridiculously awesome experience. OMGYAY.

Restructuring the whole BTIS 'verse in my head. Considering giving it a nonlinear structure (but not quite sure how that would work with the main storylines) or possibly a framing device (maybe a Behind the Music sort of thing? but who would do a BTM thing on a band that's just kind of a big deal on the Internet?) but the current structure isn't working for me. In any case, if I'm doing it for NaNo, I still have a month before I have to actually have a structure firmly in mind.

In other news, I haven't left the house in several days. I am fairly sure that most people would consider this a Bad Thing. Can I self-diagnose myself with Avoidant Personality Disorder? Because I think it might fit.

It's not like I'm actually getting anything done...despite the mental restructuring of BTIS, it's not like I'm actually writing anything. I finished backing up my music collection, which is...only important if you're crazy and OCD like me. I am considering applying as a researcher to one of those text-message-search-engine thingies because then I could earn money without leaving the house, and also I can't find any jobs I'm qualified for in my actual field. So, yeah, basically I'm not doing anything. At all.

Blah.

Um. In the 'less depressing' category...uh...I forgot I preordered the Kings DVD box set, so getting the shipping notice cheered me up a bit. Yay, Jack! I sold another book on Half.Com. There is new Glee and Dollhouse this week (right?) although no new Psych. I've got like half a dozen things being shipped to me right now...I hope they arrive soon.

Oh! And I've now been introduced to the ridiculousness that is xkcdsw. I think this is my favorite of the ones I've seen so far.

And we have chocolate chip cookies and chocolate frosting.

...I kind of fail at life a bit.

LJ's server going down makes me NOT HAPPY. DISTINCTLY NOT HAPPY.

Blah.

Anyway...on a brighter note...the ARD:U boys got the rest of The Reaction uploaded to their site! Very excited. I love them so much, I miss them during the hiatus. They win at everything. SO MUCH LOVE YOU GUYS. SO MUCH. (The link for part 3 is wrong, but manually changing it will get you the right track.) It's SO WEIRD hearing a girl contribute. Weird, but awesome.

Um. I don't think I've given my opinions on Glee here yet? But to sum up, I enjoyed the preview/pilot. It has problems, which I hope will get fixed in the series proper. I watched the leaked version, not the aired version, and I've heard mixed reviews from people who've watched both -- some say the leaked version flows better and provides more important information, some say the aired version cuts out the denser or less important parts. Not having seen both, I don't know, but yeah, enjoyed it. I am preemptively loving Tina and Kurt best. We'll see how that works out.

There is the slight problem that I already had a 'glee' tag for things that have nothing to do with the show of that name. ;D

Unrelated: I think my research addiction is getting a bit out of hand. I spent a good chunk of today researching video game consoles and console wars for the BTIS verse. The only problem with that? Nothing that requires that research will come up until way later in the timeline than I am. (If you would like to contribute opinions, have at. I know next to nothing about video game consoles, even after researching, which is a problem when two key characters are diehard gamers. I win at attempting to write stuff I have no background for.)

Yesterday was Blog Like It Isn't You Day, and as you may have noticed, I was blogging as Tasha. She's a minor OC for one of my original verses; it's fun to write as Tasha, she's so non-angsty. Unless someone mentions the name Devlin. Generally very upbeat and cheerful and bright-side. Like I said, fun. I should've apped her to the Rift instead of Jack.

Have been writing. Or trying to write. It goes erratically. I've got 1,854 words now though! Although I still have to go back and replace the anachronistic Doctor Who conversation with something...less anachronistic. But Michael's finally showed up, and since the whole point of this writing exercise is to introduce him to the plot, that's a good thing.

In related news, have I mentioned I love [info]little_details? Because I DO. I don't use them very often but when I need them, they're SO AWESOME. Even if I inadvertently sparked an argument about whether my question was appropriate for the comm at all. Oops. Anyway, yes, [info]little_details wins at the Internet.

The Glee pilot leaked and I finally got my hands on it, so I think I'm gonna watch that today. Still have not watched the PD finale. It'll happen eventually.

Afternoon wasn't a total loss. Got cute waitress's phone number. Also: new concept for tat on right forearm. Need to do sketches on something other than café napkins. Will keep you all updated if it works out to anything.

Text from RB; he's holding a party tonight. Will be there!! Finally get to meet the infamous brothers and sister. Will try to collect blackmail material. Want to know how RB turned out...well, like RB. Family must be weird.

Need a REAL S.O. to go partying with. :( :( :(

Spent a good chunk of the day lying on the couch cringing from headache pain. Bah. Finally my mom came home with Excedrin and I took it (and if you know anything of my aversion to medication you should realize how much pain I was in) and eventually the headache broke up and I feel better now.

As I mentioned on Twitter, the kid brother is home for the summer now. He spent most of today complaining about not having a job, and then complaining about the TV remote not working. (And then complaining about BOTH AT ONCE.) I am sad to no longer have the house to myself all day during the week.

I may have figured out an answer to the Conor/Tess subplot conundrum. Now I just have to figure out how Conor comes to own a restaurant.

The Tony reactions at [info]broadwaysecrets this week are hilarious, OMG. But I'd totally kill to see Hunter, Jeff, Susan, and Heidi host the awards, ngl, that would be awesome.

So is everybody reading this week's xkcd series? Because if not you should be. Because it's AWESOME.

More to the point, does anybody know if Nathan Fillion is reading it? I know somebody on the RSS feed claimed to have tweeted him a link, but I don't know if he actually saw said link or is reading it. If not he should be.

Also, "no, that's the opposite of true" and "things are rarely just crazy enough to work, but they're frequently just crazy enough to fail hilariously" are awesome lines and I'm going to be stealing borrowing at least the first for my Better Than It Sounds 'verse because it's exactly the sort of thing Liam would say to Kyle.

Speaking of.
